FAIRFIELD, CT (September 20, 2003)- The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team played perhaps their most physical match of the season and came away with a 1-1 tie against America East power Northeastern. Senior Carlos Silva (East Haven, CT) tied the game for the Pioneers on a penalty kick with 12:31 remaining in regulation.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jason Roeder (Independence, MN) made seven saves in his second start of the season. Sergio Saccoccio made two saves for the Huskies. Jeff Gannaon opened the scoring in the first half when he buried a pass from Jay Betley.
The Pioneers defense frustrated Northeastern for nearly the entire match, which led to hot tempers by the end of the match. As the temper flared there were four cautions handed out and towards the end of the game both teams, on and off the field, had plenty to say to each other.
One player that has been getting a lot of attention around the NEC is freshman defender Eric Bradley (C. Waxford, Ireland) for his tremendous play on defense as he is always in position to play the ball and is a big reason why the Pioneers have a chance to win any game. Today was no different as consistently got the ball out of harms way and started the attack for Sacred Heart by pushing the ball up field.
The Pioneers will return to action when they travel to Stony Brook for a 4:00 PM match on September 24. Sacred Heart will return home on October 10 for a 12:30 PM match against Monmouth at Campus Field.
