SHU Travels to Robert Morris... Sacred Heart hits to the road to for a two-game Pennsylvania road trip starting Thursday afternoon at Robert Morris. The Pioneers suffered their first Northeast Conference loss on Sunday, 15-8, to Monmouth and are currently third in the league standings with a 3-1 mark. The Colonials have lost five-straight since their 15-12 win over Central Connecticut back in March.
The Series... SHU leads the all-time series, 1-0. The Pioneers took the first-ever meeting, 15-2, last season at home. The 2005 season was the Colonials first year of competition as a program.
Up Next... The Pioneers extend their Western Pennsylvania road trip and travel to St. Francis-PA on Saturday, April 15 for a 12 noon start.
Last Meeting with Robert Morris... Sacred Heart senior JoAnn Montesarchio scored three goals and handed out three assists as the Pioneers came away with a 15-2 win over Robert Morris in the 2005 season finale for both teams. Montesarchio scored her first goal at the 27:27 mark and the Pioneers were off and running. SHU scored nine-straight goals before the Colonials could answer. The senior midfielder scored twice on the run and assisted on back-to-back Maureen Hohn goals. Robert Morris got on the scoreboard at the 3:19 mark as Josephine Zizic buried a pass from Bethany Mahaffey. The Pioneers closed the half with scores from Emily Tully and Heather Gureckis to lead 11-1 at the break. Gureckis opened the scoring for SHU in the second half, scoring her game-high fourth goal of the game off a feed from Brianna Bubeck. Senior defenseman Jamie Pettit followed with her first career goal to give SHU a 13-1 lead. RMU's Pamela DeGuffroy scored a goal on a free position shot for the Colonials lone goal of the half. SHU closed out the game with a pair of free position scores from Montesarchio and sophomore Elizabeth Fisher, who scored her first career goal.
Scouting the Colonials... Robert Morris posts a 2-11 overall record and a 1-4 NEC mark heading into Thursday's game. The Colonials have plenty of offense, averaging 10.62 goals per game but struggle defensively, allowing 17.38 goals per outing. RMU boasts a pair of 30 goal scorers in Jennifer Collins (39g, 10a) and Ashley Levering (30g, 4a). Collins is second in the league in goals per game (3.00) and fourth in points per game (3.77). Kate Dunlap, Kelly Dreisch and Lauren Hartsfield have all shared minutes in goal this season for the Colonials.
Last Time Out... Monmouth got five points from Katie Degen and Kristin Ray as the Hawks outscored Sacred Heart 8-3 in the second half to post a 15-8 win. The Hawks scored the last five goals of the game to pull away after leading 7-5 at the half. Monmouth struck first taking the opening draw with Degen scoring unassisted just 12 seconds in. The Pioneers responded 55 seconds in but the Hawks rattled off a four-goal run over the next 10 minutes to take a 5-1 lead. The Pioneers halted the rally at 12:53 and the two teams traded goals for the rest of the half. Monmouth scored twice to open the second half and pushed the lead back to four, 10-6, at 36:57. Sacred Heart pulled back within two, 10-8, but that would it for the Pioneer offense as the Hawks pulled away. MU's Carolyn Raveia registered back-to-back scores followed by Erica Evangelisti, Stott and Ray to close it out for the 15-8 win. SHU's Heather Gureckis and Mary Montesarchio had a goal and two assists each while Brianna Bubeck and Amanda Williams each had a pair of scores. Senior Candice Celebre made 15 saves in goal.
History... This is the Pioneer's eighth year of competition in the Northeast Conference. Sacred Heart has qualified for the NEC Tournament four times and posts a 74-64 Division I record. The Pioneers have posted 10 wins in each of the last three years and have not had a losing season since 1998.
