MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (March 28, 2008) - The Sacred Heart Pioneers used a 10-goal second half to erase a 6-5 deficit at the break and come away with a 15-9 Northeast Conference win at Robert Morris Friday afternoon. The Pioneers got four goals from junior captain Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) who scored three during a 10-1 run in the second half to lead the Pioneers to their fourth-straight win, staying perfect in the NEC at 3-0.
The Colonials (2-7, 1-2 NEC) answered an early SHU goal by Meghan McCaffrey (Garden City, NY) with a 4-0 run to jump in front 4-1 at the 18 minute mark. RMU got four goals in the first half from Emily Tomlinson as they out shot Sacred Heart 13-8 in the half and led 6-5 at the break.
The Pioneers (6-5, 3-0 NEC) kicked their offense into high gear in the second half, outscoring RMU 10-1 over the first 21 minutes of play. Senior Alyssa Harris (Kings Park, NY) started a 3-0 run out of the half with a pair of goals followed by an unassisted marker off the stick of fellow senior Liz Ottey (Baltimore, MD). The Colonials briefly answered with a goal by Ashley Trombetta on the ensuing draw to pull within 8-7 but the Pioneers countered with 7-0 run that put the game away.
Junior Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT) got it started with an 8meter goal at 21:06 followed by a pair of unassisted scores from senior Katie Salamone (Baltimore, MD). Montesarchio tacked on three-straight and Salamone ended it with a goal at 9:15 for what proved an insurmountable 15-7 lead.
The Pioneers held a 15-13 advantage on shots in the second half and won 14 draws on the day. SHU also won the ground ball battle 17-16. Sophomore Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) made seven saves in goal for the Pioneers in earning the win.
Montesarchio's four goals and two assists day puts the junior over the 100 point plateau for her career. She now has 53 career goals and 50 career assists. Her two assists today gave her 20 for the season, setting a new school record for assists in a season. She is just two off the school mark for assists in her career.
Sacred Heart stays in Pennsylvania and heads to Saint Francis (PA) for a conference tilt on Sunday afternoon. Opening draw is set for 12 noon.
