LORETTO, Pa. (March 30, 2008) - The Sacred Heart Pioneers scored 12 first half goals while holding a 35-5 advantage on shots in an 18-2 run away Northeast Conference win at Saint Francis (PA) Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers had eight different players score on Sunday led by a five goal effort from senior Katie Salamone (Baltimore, MD) in winning their fifth-straight game and improving to a perfect 4-0 in NEC play.
The Pioneers (7-5, 4-0 NEC) wasted little time in taking command of the game, scoring the first nine goals in the lopsided win. Salamone scored three of her five in the first half and also added a pair of assists in the win, giving the senior over 100 points for her career. Salamone came in needing two points to hit the century mark and she came away with a career-best seven point afternoon. Fellow senior Liz Ottey (Baltimore, MD) need just three points to hit 100 for her career and she came through scoring twice and assisting on two others in the win.
Saint Francis (0-9, 0-3 NEC) got a pair of goals from Meghan Crosby, breaking up SHU's 9-0 run in the first and adding another 10 minutes into the second for her team's only scores. The Pioneers also got a big day from juniors Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT) and Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) who combined for five goals and six assists. Williams buried four on the day with a pair of assists for a season-best six-point afternoon. Montesarchio, coming in have passed out nine assists already this week, added to her league leading totals scoring once and assisting on four others.
Senior Alyssa Harris (Kings Park, NY) scored three goals of her won while junior Meghan McCaffrey (Garden City, NY) also had a multiple point day with a goal and a career-best four helpers. SHU's Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) needed to make just three saves in earning the win in goal.
SHU won the ground ball battle with 25 pick-ups to the Red Flash's 10 and also took 12 draw controls. The Pioneers turned it over a season-low six times in the win.
The Pioneers will stay on the road next weekend for a pair of NEC games at Long Island on Friday, April 4th and Wagner on Sunday, April 6th.
