Maggie Araneo’s eight-point performance powers Pioneers past Manhattan
RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Behind a career-high eight-point performance from senior Maggie Araneo, the Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team earned a hard-fought 9-8 road victory over Manhattan, improving to 3-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.
Araneo led the offensive charge with her first hat trick of the season while dishing out a career-best five assists, factoring into nearly every key moment for the Pioneers. In her first year, Madalynn Eder-Linell earned her third win between the pipes and recorded a seven-save performance.

How It Happened
Manhattan controlled the opening quarter, outscoring Sacred Heart 3-1 to take the early lead. The Pioneers' lone goal came at the 8:56 mark, when Nadine Galiano finished from a tight angle for her sixth of the season.
Sacred Heart responded with a dominant second quarter, erupting for six goals to take a 7-4 advantage into halftime. Araneo sparked the surge, contributing to all six goals with two scores and four assists.
Araneo got things started, netting her first of the game at the 11:10 mark before finding Sadie Stevens to tie the game at 3-3. Ryann Kearns followed with a short-handed goal at 9:00 to give the Pioneers their first lead, 4-3. Less than two minutes later, Jamie Tanner extended the lead to 5-3 off another Araneo assist.
After Manhattan cut it to one midway through the quarter, Galiano responded once again with a woman-up goal to make it 6-4. Araneo then capped the half with a goal in the final minute, sending Sacred Heart into the break with momentum.
The Pioneers were held scoreless in the third quarter despite four shot attempts, while Manhattan capitalized with two goals to trim the deficit to 7-6 entering the fourth.
In the final frame, both teams traded goals, including key finishes from Tanner and Araneo to maintain a narrow edge. In the closing minute, Manhattan had a chance to force overtime, but the Sacred Heart defense stood tall, coming up with a crucial stop to secure the 9-8 victory.
Following today's performance, Araneo continues to climb the program record book and now sits just shy of a major career milestone. She sits at 91 goals, just nine shy of reaching her 100th career goal.
