How It Happened
Sacred Heart struck first just two minutes into the contest, as Tanner opened the scoring to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 edge. Canisius responded quickly with a woman-up goal before taking its first lead of the afternoon, 2-1, midway through the opening quarter.
The Pioneers answered late in the first, with Lange finding the back of the net to even the score at 2-2 heading into the second quarter.
Canisius regained momentum early in the second, scoring to take a 3-2 lead, but Sacred Heart responded with its strongest stretch of the game. Out of the break, the Golden Griffins capitalized on opportunities in the third quarter, scoring two to regain control, 6-5. Tanner completed her four-goal performance with a key strike midway through the frame to tie the game once again, 6-6, heading into the final 15 minutes.
In the fourth, Canisius extended its lead with a pair of goals, including a critical tally midway through the period to make it 8-6. The Pioneers continued to push offensively, generating chances down the stretch, and broke through in the final minute as Sadie Stevens scored with 52 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to one.
Despite the late surge, Sacred Heart was unable to find the equalizer before time expired, as Canisius held on for the 8-7 victory.
