Balanced attack and second-half surge lift SHU to MAAC victory Saturday afternoon
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team unleashed a dominant second-half surge behind a balanced offensive attack that featured six different goal scorers, as Nadine Galiano, Ryann Kearns, Jamie Tanner, and Maggie Araneo each netted two goals to power the Pioneers past Merrimack, 10-6, on Campus Field Saturday afternoon.
After a back-and-forth opening quarter, the Pioneers found their rhythm and never looked back, outscoring the Warriors 6-2 over the final two periods to secure the conference win.

Sacred Heart came out strong with an early strike from Tanner, who buried a free-position goal to open the scoring. Tanner stayed hot, adding another in the first quarter as the Pios battled through a tight 3-2 deficit after one.
The momentum began to shift in the second quarter as the Warriors doubled their lead, 4-2. Erin Herrold sparked the Pioneers' offense before Kearns finished off a feed from Galiano to even the score heading into halftime, 4-4.
The third quarter proved to be the turning point. Galiano, Araneo, and Kearns each found the back of the net in a dominant stretch, flipping a one-goal game into a multi-score advantage, 7-4. The Pioneers' defense locked in as well, holding Merrimack scoreless in the frame while forcing key turnovers and limiting opportunities.
Merrimack attempted to rally early in the fourth, but Sacred Heart had the answer every time. Araneo and Galiano each added second-half goals to keep the Warriors at bay, while Melina Lange capped the scoring with a man-up goal in the final minutes to seal the 10-6 victory.
