Jared Eng Tallies Three Points as Air Force Defeats Sacred Heart 6-3 On Sunday

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team scored two power-play goals Sunday afternoon, but a four-goal second period by Air Force powered the Falcons to a 6-3 win over the Pioneers on Sunday at Webster Bank Arena. Sophomore defenseman Jared Eng scored his first goal of the season and had three points in the game for Sacred Heart.

Air Force (9-9-5, 7-5-3 AHA) got tallied the first goal 6:35 into the game. Stephen Carew forced a turnover in the Pioneers' zone and fed Cole Gunner in front of the net to put the Falcons ahead 1-0. Sacred Heart (0-21-2, 0-15-2) was not deterred, firing 13 shots in the first period to Air Force's 14. With 1:47 remaining in the first period, the Pioneers tied the game. Will Rayner and Chad Barthelmess assisted on Eng's goal, a power-play tally, to make the score 1-1 going into the first intermission.

The Falcons, however, dominated the second period. Air Force scored twice in the first 1:49 to take a 3-1 lead. Kyle DeLaurell and Gunner then scored 1:41 apart to make the score 5-1 at the 5:47 mark of the second period. The Falcons outshot Sacred Heart 22-8 in the middle period. 

The Pioneers, however, did have a bit of a comeback in them. Brian Sheehan tallied his second power-play goal in as many games at the 5:11 mark of the third period to make the score 5-2. Eng and Barthelmess assisted on the extra-man marker. Just over four minutes later, Chad Filteau scored off a brilliant feed by Nick Curry to get the Pioneers within two, 5-3, with 10:44 remaining in the game.  Air Force would tack on another goal in the third period for the 6-3 final score. Sacred Heart outshot the Falcons 17-6 in the final period, but could not force overtime.

For the game, Air Force outshot Sacred Heart 42-38. Sophomore goalie Andrew Bodnarchuk made 20 saves in relief of Steven Legatto who had 16 saves in 25:47 of action.

Sacred heart is back in action on Sunday, Jan. 27 with a 4 p.m. game at Princeton.
