New York, NY – The Sacred Heart Pioneers let up seven runs in the final two innings to fall to Columbia, 9-2, snapping the Pioneers' 12 game win streak, Monday afternoon at Robertson Field in New York City. SHU finishes the regular season with a record of 32-22 overall and 23-9 in the Northeast Conference. The 32 regular season wins is the most in program history.
Senior John Murphy (Seymour, CT) went 2 for 4 on the afternoon, and is now just seven hits shy of the all-time hits record at Sacred Heart.
Columbia got on the board first in the second inning. Third baseman David Vandercook doubled down the right field line to score Aaron Silbar, giving Columbia the 1-0 lead. Vandercook would come around to score the Lions second run on a throwing error by Sacred Heart as they attempted to end the inning with a double play.
In the seventh, cleanup hitter Joey Falcone laced a fastball into the gap in left center to score Jordan Serena and Gus Craig, making it 4-2 Columbia.
In the eighth, Serena would knock in a couple of his own with a base hit to left field.
Junior left hander Nick Leiningen (Millwood, NY) pitched two scoreless relief innings for Sacred Heart.
