POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart women's fencing team kicked off its dual meet season with a 6-2 day at the Vassar Invitational on Sunday. The Pioneers defeated Hunter 23-4, Stevens Tech 16-11, Vassar 16-11, Yeshiva 27-0, CCNY 17-10 and Queens 25-2 while dropping matches to Cornell 17-10 and FDU 14-13. The highlight of the day was the wins over vastly improved Vassar and Stevens Tech squads.
The epee squad led the way with a 54-14 record. The squad won each squad match on the day. In the Pioneers' four-starter rotation senior Megan Floyd went 18-3, junior Mia Volpe was 14-2 and sophomore Carly Glowacky and freshman Caitlin Stanton both had 11-5 marks. Saber was 43-20 and was paced by a 15-3 performance from sophomore Julia Greene and a 14-4 record from sophomore Taylor Walsh. Foil was 33-32 and was led by senior captain Tess Kallmeyer (10-9) and freshman Bailey Partridge (9-5).
"I am very happy with how hard we fought today", head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel said. "We were hoping to go 3-1 against the top half of the field (Cornell, FDU, Vassar and Stevens Tech) but we had to settle for a split. Our saber squad had an excellent opportunity to close out the FDU match but they seemed to let the pressure get to them. This is something that we will be working on at practice this week.
"The epee squad is progressing nicely and our four starters had solid performances," Vrabel added. "We have had to move two of our epee fencers to other weapons this season in order to get the nine best athletes starting for us and I can't say enough about how well Nikki Price and Bailey Partridge have met this challenge for the team. Bailey is an excellent epeeist but also is very talented in foil. She is making an amazing transition back to foil for us this season and I see her being a major part of our success this season. Nikki Price had never fenced saber before September and her progress has been incredible for us. Considering she has only fenced saber for two months, her 10-10 record yesterday was remarkable. I also have to give credit to hard the entire team but especially the foil squad fought today. This experience will be very helpful for our conference matches this weekend.
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, November 15th at MIT in Boston for the Northeast Fencing Conference Meet # 1. Action will begin at 10 AM.
