POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart women's fencing team kicked off the second half of the season with a perfect 5-0 result at the Vassar Fencing Challenge. The Pioneers defeated Cleveland State in two matches (23-4 and 22-5), Detroit 24-3, Tufts 18-9 and NJIT 23-4.
Megan Floyd (12-1), Mia Volpe (12-1) and Caitlin Stanton (9-3) had excellent days in leading the epee squad to a 33-6 record. Saber (26-9) was paced by a perfect 13-0 performance from Taylor Walsh and an almost perfect 12-1 result from Julia Greene. Foil went 32-10 and was solid throughout with winning records from Bailey Partridge (10-1), CJ McCarter (10-1), Tess Kallmeyer (7-4) and Julia Cupolo (3-0).
"I was very pleased with our overall focus today", said head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "We have worked very hard over the last two weeks on staying consistent with our discipline in choosing the proper actions and opportunities to execute and it showed today. Walsh (43-15), Greene (45-13) and Floyd (45-13) have been dominant all season and it was nice to see Volpe (35-16) and Stanton (29-15) also improve their season records. Foil was consistent throughout the day and I was very pleased by the progress that Partridge (29-21), McCarter (30-24) and Kallmeyer (25-30) have made in improving their footwork transitions and their point control. I look forward to being at our best at Penn next Saturday".
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, January 24th at the Philadelphia Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania's fencing facility. Action will begin at 10 AM.
