POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Sacred Heart kicked off its dual meet season with a 5-2 day at the Vassar Invitational on Sunday. The Pioneers defeated Hunter 20-7, Stevens Tech 16-11, Yeshiva 26-1, CCNY 19-8 and FDU 21-6 while dropping matches to Cornell 21-6 and Northwestern 19-8.
The epee squad led the way with a 46-17 record. The squad won all but one of its matches on the day, losing only to a Victoria Wines led Cornell squad 5-4. Sophomore Caitlin Stanton (11-3) and Junior Carly Glowacky (13-4) led the way and were ably supported by Senior Mia Volpe (10-6), and Freshmen Samantha Abbott (6-2 and Xenovia Bartholomew (6-2). Saber went 45-18 and was paced by a 18-3 performance from Junior team captain Julia Greene. The two new freshmen starters Mackenna Lamphere (14-6) and Hasoni Austin (9-6) had nice beginnings to their Pioneer dual meet careers. Foil was 28-35 and was led by a 11-7 day from Senior CJ McCarter.
"I think that our performance can best described as solid", comments head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "It sometimes is hard to gauge our growth because the strength of our competition can vary greatly. CJ McCarter and Bailey Partridge were silver and bronze medalists in foil at the BIG ONE Last week but they struggled against the higher quality foil squads that we saw today. We did see in foil that we have to work on quickness, balance transitions and attack distance this week in practice. We were outquicked by several squads at Vassar and this was concerning. I was happy with the performances of Stanton and Glowacky in epee today. They were able to adjust tempos and were taking very early advantage of opportunities to score. They also did a fine job of incorporating into their games strategies that we have worked hard on over the past week. Julia Greene remains strong in saber but a lack of confidence caused her to lose three bouts on Sunday. Lamphere and Austin had good starts to their dual match careers but they also need to improve their decision making. All in all The Vassar Invitational was a good learning experience for us. It clearly showed us what we need to concentrate on this week as we prepare for our important Conference matches this Saturday.
The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, November 21sth at Brown University in Providence RI for the Northeast Conference Meet # 1. Action will begin at 10 AM.
