Men's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener at High Point 13-5

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team opened its 2015 season with a 13-5 loss to the High Point Panthers at Vert Stadium Saturday. Sophomore midfielder Bryce Jurk (Burlington, Ont.) scored two goals while Jon Flood (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made 15 saves in goal.
High Point (1-3) controlled possession early, scoring first with 11:31 to play in the first quarter on a Connor Robinson tally. Jamie Piluso then won the ensuing faceoff for the Panthers, scooping the groundball and scoring six seconds later to make the score 2-0. After another faceoff win, Matt Thistle scored with 11:05 to play in the quarter to give High Point a 3-0 lead.
Sacred Heart (0-1) had a chance to get in the game with an extra-man opportunity with 7:10 remaining in the opening quarter. Brian Masi (Smithtown, N.Y.) had two shots go wide of goal on the extra-man as the Pioneers remained off the scoreboard. High Point took a 4-0 lead with 4:14 left in the first on a goal by Dan Lomas. The Panthers tacked on one more goal before the end of the quarter to take a 5-0 lead.
Masi put the Pioneers on the scoreboard with 11:44 to play in the second quarter, ripping a shot past High Point goalie Austin Geisler to make the score 6-1. Jurk scored Sacred Heart's second goal with 0:25 left in the second, putting in an Ian Farley (Camillus, N.Y.) pass right in front of the Panthers' net after an unsettled situation.
High Point scored four straight goals to open the third quarter, taking a 10-2 lead. The Pioneers ended that run with a Thomas Diplacido (Wrentham, Mass.) goal with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter. Alex Dodge (Smithtown, N.Y.) made the score 10-4 1:02 into the fourth quarter, getting the first career assist from Julian Garritano (Markham, Ont.). Jurk scored his second goal of the game with 7:47 remaining, putting the score at 12-5.
The Panthers outshot Sacred Heart 44-22 and had 39 groundballs to the Pioneers' 25. Thistle led High Point with two goals and two assists.
The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday, March 4 when Sacred Heart travels to Dartmouth for a 3 p.m. game.
