Pioneers Fall to Marist in MAAC Semifinal

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The third-seeded Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team fell to second-seeded Marist, 12-8, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) semifinal on Thursday evening at Siena.

How It Happened:
Marist struck first, but Sacred Heart responded with back-to-back goals from JJ Fox and John Murray to take an early 2-1 lead. After Marist evened the score, Dom Basti found the back of the net to give the Pioneers a 3-2 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Sacred Heart extended its lead with goals from Tim Kiely and Matt Pepe, going ahead 5-2. However, Marist closed the half on a 4-0 run over the final five minutes to take a 6-5 lead into the break.
The Pioneers were held scoreless in the third quarter as the Red Foxes continued their run, building a 10-5 advantage heading into the final frame.
Sacred Heart snapped the drought early in the fourth, as Will Moulton assisted on a behind-the-back goal by John Murray. Less than 30 seconds later, Basti added his second goal of the game to cut the deficit to three. Marist answered at the 9:01 mark to extend its lead to 11-7.
Basti completed his hat trick with 3:49 remaining, but the Red Foxes added another goal and held off the Pioneers down the stretch to secure the 12-8 win and advance to the MAAC Championship.
Hunter Molway led the way at the faceoff X, winning 11 of 13 attempts while collecting five ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Craig Daria recorded 12 saves in net.
Sacred Heart concludes its season with an 11-4 overall record and a 5-3 mark in MAAC play.
