SHU Clinches Spot in MAAC Tournament
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team dropped a narrow 14-13 decision at Marist in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on Saturday afternoon. Despite the setback, the Pioneers have secured a spot in the MAAC postseason tournament.
Matt Pepe paced the Sacred Heart offense with six points, coming from one goal and five assists.

How It Happened:
Sacred Heart struck first in the opening quarter, with Michael Moreschi finding the back of the net. After a quick Marist response, Dom Basti and James Moran scored back-to-back to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead. The Red Foxes added one late in the frame, but Basti's second goal made it 4-2 heading into the second.
Marist pulled within one early in the second, but Moreschi answered to restore a two-goal edge. The Red Foxes then rattled off three straight goals to take a 6-5 lead. John Murray tied the game at 6-6, though Marist closed the half with another goal to lead 7-6 at the break.
The Red Foxes opened the second half scoring to go up 8-6, but Pepe and Carney responded with back-to-back goals to even things at 8-8. Marist answered once again, building a 10-8 advantage before JJ Fox cut the deficit to 10-9 heading into the fourth.
Carney tied the game at 10-10 early in the final quarter, but Marist countered with two straight goals. After Sacred Heart pulled within one at 7:35, the Red Foxes again scored back-to-back to extend their lead. Basti and Carney each found the net in the final 2:30, but the Pioneers came up just short in a 14-13 loss.
Ryan Grove went 22-for-29 at the faceoff X and collected 13 ground balls, while Craig Daria made 10 saves in goal.

Sacred Heart closes out the regular season on Wednesday, April 22, hosting Iona at Campus Field. Opening faceoff is set for 3 p.m.
