
Pioneers Drop Road Contest at Siena

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Despite building an early lead, the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team fell to Siena, 15-11, on Saturday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action. A decisive third-quarter surge by the Saints proved to be the difference, as the Pioneers dropped their second straight following a 10-game winning streak.

How It Happened:
Sacred Heart came out strong, scoring three unanswered goals to open the game. Joel Palasz netted the first two scores for the Pioneers, while John Murray added another to give SHU a 3-0 advantage. Siena got on the board with 2:08 remaining in the first, but the Pioneers carried a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.
The Saints responded with back-to-back goals to even the score at 3-3 early in the second. Jake Carney quickly answered to restore the lead, but Siena tied it once again. Carney struck for his second goal of the game, and Matt Pepe followed with another to put SHU ahead, 6-4. Siena added a late goal before halftime, sending the teams into the break with Sacred Heart leading, 6-5.
Pepe opened the second half with his second goal of the day to extend the lead to 7-5, but Siena seized control from there. The Saints rattled off six consecutive goals in the third quarter to turn a two-goal deficit into an 11-7 lead heading into the final frame.
Siena added one more goal to start the fourth before Tim Kiely and Jake Holmes scored back-to-back to bring the Pioneers within three, 12-9. However, the teams traded goals down the stretch, and the Saints maintained their cushion to secure the 15-11 victory.
