Pioneers Earn 21-17 Win Over Vermont In Home Opener

The Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team defeated visiting University of Vermont 21-17 Saturday afternoon on Campus Field. The victory improves the Pioneers to 2-2 on the year, while the Catamounts fall to 2-6.
The Pioneers put home goals 14 seconds and 43 seconds into the fourth quarter to build the largest lead of the game 19-11. After just over four minutes of scoreless action, Vermont mounted a comeback. The run began at the 10:02 mark with a tally from Dyson White on a pass from Cam Milligan. Milligan fed Karl Weller 2:30 later to make the score 19-13 and the first of five goals in 1:47 stretch to close the score to 19-17.
The final goal of the run was a man-up tally with 5:55 to play with Milligan striking unassisted. The Sacred Heart defense would not allow another tally in the game and Brian Masi (1:50) and Reed Avveduti (:33) scored in the final minutes to secure the win.
Alec Dauses opened the scoring with a tally only 53 seconds into the game for Sacred Heart. Vermont answered with a man-up tally at the 12:40 mark, before SHU rattled off three goals in 69 seconds to build a 4-1 advantage. The Catamounts ended the period with a tally and scored the first goal fo the second quarter to creep back within a tally, 4-3, but would get no closer the remainder of the game. SHU ended the mini-run from Vermont with three unanswered and outscored Vermont 8-4 the remainder of the half to take a 12-7 halftime lead.
Jon Flood earned the win in net for Sacred Heart, making 14 saves, including five in the fourth quarter. Jon Kaplan played 43:18 in net for Vermont, making 11 saves and giving up 17 goals. Justin Rosenberg gave up four goals and made four saves in 16:42 of action.
Alex Dodge led the Pioneers with six points, netting four goals and handing out a pair of assists. Dauses finished with four goals as well, while Jerome Rigor handed out four assist for the Pioneers. Julian Garritano had a hat trick, as did Tim Caton, as 10 Pioneers scored a tally on the day.
Mike Calvagna was 23-39 at the face-off X for Sacred Heart, finishing with 10 ground balls. SHU had a 54-47 advantage in ground balls on the day seven other players recording at least four. SHU finished with a 5-444 advantage in shots and both teams had 16 successful clears.
White had a game-high five goals, and an assist, to lead the Catamounts on the offensive side of the field. Milligan finished with two goals and two assists as well as a pair of ground balls. Luc LeBlanc was 13-27 at the face-off X, with Bubba Anderson going 3-12.
Sacred Heart continues a three-game homestand on Tuesday at 4:30 when it hosts Lafayette on Campus Field
