Pioneers fall to Niagara, 4-0

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.—The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team fell to Niagara 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Webster Bank Arena. The teams split their regular season series as SHU took game one last night, 4-3. 

The Pioneers (3-7-2, 2-5 AHC outshot the Purple Eagles (2-8-2, 2-3-1 AHC) 37-30, but failed to get past Jackson Teichroeb. Teichroeb recorded 37 saves for the shutout. Niagara broke the game open with a goal by Johnny Curran on a breakaway 40 seconds into regulation. TJ Sarcona had the lead pass on the goal. Second period was where Niagara took hold of the game with three goals in the period. Nicolas Carrier got things going with another breakaway goal on the lead pass from Tyler Tomberlin. Stephen Pietrobon added the third goal on a dish from Derek Brown. Curran added his second goal of the game on the power play for Niagara on a another feed from Brown. The Pioneers rifled off 14 shots in the third but were rendered scoreless. Seniors Justin Danforth and Evan Jasper led the Pioneers attack with six shots each.

Niagara went 1-for-5 on the power play, while SHU went 0-for-4 after three power play goals in yesterday's win over Niagara. Brett Magnus recorded 23 saves in the first two periods, Nathan Perry got three saves in the third for Sacred Heart. 

The Pioneers hit the road next week as they take on AIC on Tuesday night at the Mass Mutual Center at 7:05pm. 

First Period

- Curran started things off with a breakaway goal as he slipped past Magnus for the 1-0 score

- Jasper received a nice feed from Danforth on the power play opportunity but Teichroeb was there for the stop with 13 minutes to go in the period 

- Magnus with a strong glove side save on a slap shot by Brown halfway through the first

- Teichroeb had a beautiful backdoor save on a shot by Jordan Minello with five minutes to go in the first

Second Period                                                      

- The Pioneers killed off a 5-3 power play opportunity by Niagara to start off the second period.

- Danforth had a laser of a slap shot on the power play for SHU but Teichroeb made the stop

- Tomberlin found Carrier on the long pass for the breakaway goal and 2-0 lead for Niagara

- Pietrobon added the second goal of the period on the feed from Brown, 15:22 in the second

- Curran with the power play goal to put the Purple Eagles ahead 4-0 with 38 seconds left in the second period.

Third Period

- Nathan Perry made a diving stop on a shot by Niko Kovachis early in the third period

- SHU fired off five shots on their power play chance halfway through the third period

- Nylen with a strong slap shot saved by Teichroeb to close out regulation
