PHILADELPHIA – One run in each the eighth, ninth and tenth inning, as well as a stellar relief performance by Brent Teller, gave the Sacred Heart baseball team a 6-5 comeback triumph at Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon. The victory was the second straight for SHU in its last at bat, and third consecutive overall, as the Pioneers to move to 4-8.
Two-out RBI singles by Zack Short and Ted Shaw in the eighth and ninth, respectively, sent the game to extra innings, where SHU took advantage of a Saint Joe's error to plate the eventual game winning run in the tenth. Keith Klebart came in to score on it after doubling with two outs.
Teller than closed the door in his fifth inning of work, working around a two out walk to pick up his first career win. After giving up two runs in his first inning of work, the sixth, Teller went the final 4.1 without allowing a hit. Only three runners reached base in those 4.1 innings, as he also striking out six. He relieved starter James Cooksey, who went the first five innings and gave up three runs on six hits.
Klebart was one of four Pioneers with multiple hits. Ted Shaw led Sacred Heart with a 3-5 performance, also scoring a run in addition to his game-tying RBI. Short was also 2-5, as was Jayson Sullivan, who tied the game at three with a two-out, two-run double in the fifth.
Charlie Concannon was the lone Hawk with two hits, which included a two-run home run in the fourth inning that extended a Saint Joseph's lead to 3-0. Cal Jadacki also had two RBI's, putting St. Joes back on top 5-3 with a two-run single in the sixth.
SJU (6-7) starter Pat Vanderslice went four scoreless innings before the three-run Sacred Heart fifth. That ended his day, as he allowed eight hits while striking out seven. The only hit and run off of Justin Aungst in his three innings of work came in the eighth. Brian Lau then gave up the ninth inning run before Zach DeVincenzo was tabbed with the loss.
SHU will look to make it four in a row when they conclude their Philadelphia trip with a doubleheader at Villanova tomorrow beginning at 11:30 am.
How it Happened
- Saint Joseph's scored the opening run when Sacred Heart could not quite turn a double play in the first. Deon Stafford, who walked with one out and moved up to third on John Brue's single, came into score on Matt Maul's fielder choice.
- The Pioneers moved their first runner into scoring position in the second, as Short singled and reached third with two outs only to stranded.
- The next runner did not reach scoring position until the bottom of the fourth, when St. Joe's added two runs to its lead on Concannon's homer over the right field fence. The damage could have been worse had SHU not turned a double play on a liner to Medina at third in the previous at bat.
- Sacred Heart quickly came back to tie it in the fifth starting with Cody Doyle's RBI single that scored Dan Schock, who had doubled to lead off the inning. Shaw then singled in between two strikeouts before Sullivan tied the game with his double down the left field line.
- Saint Joseph's nearly retook the lead in bottom half, but Cooksey would strand runners on first and third with a strikeout after a two-out error had extended the inning.
- The first two batters Teller faced singled and walked before being sacrificed to second and third. Jadacki delivered the go ahead two-RBI single to put the Hawks back on top, 5-3. That would be the last hit Teller allowed, as he induced an inning ending double play in the next at bat.
- Jesus Medina gave Short a chance to cut the deficit to one in the eight, leading off with a walk and stealing second base with two outs.
- Schock then did the same for Shaw in the ninth, getting hit by a pitch to lead off before advancing to second on a wild pitch.
