
Late Fourth Quarter Run Pushes Hartford Past SHU

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team led the Hartford Hawks 12-11 with 8:28 to play Tuesday night at Al-Marzook Field, but the Hawks scored three goals in the final six minutes to come away with a 14-12 win.
Max Tuttle led SHU with four goals. Brian Masi also had four points on two goals and two assists. Bryce Jurk had a hat trick as Joe Saggese had two goals and an assist. Ryan O'Donoghue had six groundballs and two caused turnovers. Mike Calvagna won 15 of 25 faceoffs and picked up eight groundballs.
Hartford (5-7) opened the game with two goals in the first 7:07 from Dylan Jinks and Justin Huggins. Sacred Heart got on the board with a Bryce Jurk goal at the 7:26 mark, but that would be the only tally for the Pioneers in the quarter. Jaedon Henderson and Alec Brown tacked on two more goals for the Hawks to give Hartford a 4-1 lead after one period of play.
After getting behind 5-1, the Pioneers got back-to-back goals from Masi and Saggese to cut the deficit to two, 5-3, with 11:43 to play in the first half. However, Hartford goalie Ryan Vanderford made 4 saves in the quarter to keep SHU at three goals. Brown scored with 6:53 remaining in the half to give Hartford a 6-3 halftime lead.
The two sides traded two-goal runs to start the fourth quarter. Masi put SHU ahead 10-9 just 0:49 into the fourth quarter. The senior midfielder then assisted on Tuttle's fourth goal of the game with 11:41 to go to give the Pioneers an 11-9 lead. The Hawks came right back with goals from Jinks and Brown to tie the game 11-11 with 9:46 remaining. Jurk put SHU back in the lead, scooping a loose ball in front of the Hartford net and burying it past Vanderford to make the score 12-11 with 8:28 to go. Brown then scored his fourth goal of the game with 6:00 left to tie the game 12-12. Hartford took the lead, 13-12, with 1:22 to play on a Henderson goal. The Hawks then won the ensuing faceoff and took a 14-12 lead on a Jinks goal with 0:40 left in the game.
SHU outshot Hartford 46-28 and had a 44-35 advantage in groundballs. Brown led all players with six points on four goals and two assists. Henderson and Jinks both had hat tricks. Vanderford made 13 saves in goal.
The Pioneers play their final home game of the regular season on Saturday, April 22 when Cleveland State comes to Campus Field for a 12 p.m. game. Prior to Saturday's game, Sacred Heart will honor the five seniors on this year's team.
