Both players earn Second Team honors; Murugarren named to All-Rookie Team
SOMERSET, N.J.— Lucas Miquel Castrillo and Etienne Murugarren of the Sacred Heart University men's soccer team earned Northeast Conference postseason accolades, announced by the conference on Thursday.
Both players were selected Second Team All-NEC. Murugarren was also named to the NEC All-Rookie Team.
"I want to congratulate both student-athletes on their well-deserved All-NEC honors," said head coach Joe Barroso. "These individual awards are of course not possible without the efforts of the whole group as we look to push forward and compete at a high level next season."
Castrillo received the honor for the second year in a row. The senior midfielder from Aranda de Duero, Spain started 14 games and notched two points on two assists this season.
"Lucas earning All-NEC honors for the second year in a row shows his quality and how highly he is regarded in the conference," said Barroso.
Murugarren is the first rookie named to the Second Team All-NEC since Matthew Jones in 2005. The defender from Ciudad Real, Spain is also the first Pioneer named to the All-Rookie Team since Yoann Toko in 2019. Murugarren notched one point on one assist in Sacred Heart's 1-1 draw at Howard on October 24.
"Etienne throughout this season has provided leadership on and off the field for our program," said Barroso. "The presence and influence he has showed has placed him amongst the best players in the conference already in his rookie season."
Sacred Heart just missed out on a spot in the NEC semifinals. Barosso should have another good squad in 2022 as he returns Murugarren plus his top goalkeeper in Justin Siegel and second-leading scorer Olliver Persson.
