Basti appoints two captains and four assistant captains for 2022 season.
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Head coach of the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team Jon Basti announced the selection of two captains and four assistant captains who will lead the team during the 2022 season. Graduate student Conor Sullivan and senior Thomas Houlihan were appointed captains while graduate student Alex Weiss, senior Donovan Lacey, senior Max Lionetti, and junior Nick Handy will serve as assistant captains.
"We have decided to do something a little different this year," stated Basti. "We felt the depth of leadership was so good on our team that the structure was based more on a 'Leadership Council' rather than naming captains. Each man brings something different to the group and has the ability to use their individual skills to help forward the culture of our program."
The six were selected based on a team and coaches vote. The assistant captains will oversee and communicate with a specific class. Those representatives will then report to the captains and the coaches on a bi-weekly basis during a leadership group meeting.
Sullivan and Houlihan appeared in all 13 games in 2021 as they anchored the Pioneers' defense. Sullivan returns for his fifth season and will lead as captain for the second-consecutive year. The defender from Norfolk, Mass. ranked second on the team with 11 caused turnovers. Houlihan was one of just two Pioneers to start every game in the spring as he tallied 17 ground balls and caused six turnovers.
Also returning for his fifth season, Weiss appeared in every game a year ago at attack and netted three goals and an assist. Lionetti posted eight goals last season while fellow midfielder Handy scooped three ground balls.
Lacey returns after earning First-Team All-NEC recognition in 2021. The product of Brookeville, Md., Lacey led the team with 14 caused turnovers and was second with 42 groundballs. The midfielder got it done on both ends of the field as he also netted three goals and dished out three assists.
The Pioneers kick off their season on the road at Hofstra on Saturday, February 12. The first home contest will come later in the month on Sunday, February 25 when SHU hosts in-state foe Quinnipiac.
