The Pioneers will open the season on August 26 at Siena
FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team released its 2021 schedule, announced by head coach Joe Barroso on Thursday. The Pioneers return to a traditional format following a shortened 2020 spring season.
The Red & White kick off the season with a trip to Siena on August 26. SHU will open its home slate at Park Ave Field against UMass on August 30.
The Pioneers head back on the road on September 4 to take on Holy Cross. The last time these two teams met was in 2016 at Park Ave Field. SHU claimed the victory against the Crusaders, 3-1.
Sacred Heart returns to Connecticut for a three-game slate at home. The Pioneers will welcome in-state rivals in Quinnipiac (September 8) and Hartford (September 11) before closing out with a matchup against Monmouth (September 15).
SHU wraps up non-conference play with trips to Saint Peter's (September 18) and Iona (September 22). The Pioneers last played both teams on their home turf, claiming a 2-1 victory against the Peacocks in 2019 and a 1-0 win against the Gaels in 2017.
Sacred Heart begins its Northeast Conference trek at Fairleigh Dickinson on September 26. The Pioneers return to the Nutmeg State for the next three contests. SHU welcomes the top teams in the conference in Long Island (September 30) and Saint Francis (October 3). The Pioneers have a one-week gap in between games before returning to Park Ave Field to play Mount St. Mary's on October 10.
The Red & White spend most of October on the road, beginning with a return to New York to face defending champion St. Francis Brooklyn on October 14. The Pioneers head north to Bryant on October 17 before traveling down south to Howard on October 24.
Sacred Heart wraps up the regular season at Park Ave Field with two home contests against Merrimack (October 31) and Central Connecticut State (November 7). Last season, the Pioneers ended the regular season with a 2-0 upset victory over the Blue Devils. Rising sophomore Olliver Persson scored both goals for SHU.
