SHU men's lacrosse assist coach Chris Doctor has been selected as a member of the coaching staff on the national level
FAIRFIELD, Conn.—Sacred Heart men's lacrosse assistant coach Chris Doctor has been named the Head Coach of the U18 Haudenosaunee National Team and an Assistant Coach of the full Haudenosaunee National Team.
The U18 National Team had its first competition in October as they participated in the Brogden Cup at John's Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.
The national team will be playing this summer in the World Games in San Diego, Calif.
The Haudenosaunee Nationals Lacrosse Organization is an indigenous sports organization (the only one of its kind in the world) that competes on the world stage. They are sanctioned by the sovereign Haudenosaunee Grand Council and are governed by the Haudenosaunee Nationals Board of Directors.
The Iroquois Nationals Men's Lacrosse Team was formed and sanctioned by the Grand Council of the Haudenosaunee in 1983 and officially changed their name to Haudenosaunee Nationals in 2022.
The game of lacrosse is one of the Haudenosaunee most revered traditions, a celebration of health, strength, courage, leadership, fair play, and spiritually as a "medicine" game. Over a century ago, the Haudenosaunee were banned from international competition, and the Haudenosaunee Nationals have fought to gain international respect and inclusion.
"We are excited for Coach Doctor. He has represented SHU Lacrosse in so many great ways, and this just ads to that. The opportunity to represent your heritage is a very important part of our culture within our team. For him to be able to do so on the world stage is tremendous for him as a coach and a person, and for us as a program and a University," said Head Coach Jon Basti. "It is not every day that someone inside your organization earns this opportunity. It is simply AWESOME!"
Coach Doctor joined the Pioneers coaching staff prior to the 2020 season and has been specifically tasked with duties as offensive coordinator. Doctor was a coach for the Iroquois National men's team in 2014 and then a staff member for the U-19 Iroquois National squad in 2016. Both of those teams won bronze medals as the Iroquois Nationals fielded two of their strongest teams in the history of either the men's or U-19 programs.
