
Four Pioneers Earn NEC Men’s Soccer Awards

Cayuela, Gallego, Martinez and Murugarren honored
SOMERSET, N.J.— The Northeast Conference released its postseason men's soccer awards on Tuesday. Four members of the Sacred Heart University team earned accolades.
First year David Garcia Gallego and sophomore Etienne Murugarren were selected to the NEC's second team. Gallego also joins first years Koke Gracia Martinez and Javier Lopez Cayuela on the All-Rookie Team.
Gallego is the second Pioneer in a year to earn Second Team and All-Rookie honors, with Murugarren receiving both accolades last season. The Leon, Spain, native recorded two goals on the season, including the game-winner goal against Central Connecticut State in the regular season finale on Nov. 3.
Murugarren earns Second Team All-NEC for the second-straight year. The Ciudad de Real, Spain, native has been impactful in all 16 games for the Pioneers. Murugarren took eight shots this season, with a career-high three shots against St. Francis Brooklyn on Oct. 13.
Martinez and Cayuela are the other two Pioneers to make the All-Rookie Team. Martinez appeared in all 16 games. The Zaragoza, Spain, native notched his first career goal in SHU's victory at Hartford on Sept. 7. Martinez was selected NEC Rookie of the Week on Sept. 12. Cayuela saw action in 16 contests and 15 starts. The Cartagena, Spain native, tallied one goal and two assists, including the first goal of the season for the Pioneers against Holy Cross on Sept. 3.
Sacred Heart recently earned its first Division I postseason victory last Sunday in the first round of the NEC Tournament and will play No. 1 FDU in the semifinals on Thursday at 7 p.m.
