Head Coach Jon Basti has announced a trio of captains to lead the team
FAIRFIELD, Conn.— Sacred Heart men's lacrosse Head Coach Jon Basti has announced the team captains for the 2023 season. Graduate Student Thomas Houlihan, and seniors Nick Handy and Ryan Stout have been selected to lead the Pioneers this year.
Houlihan earns the honor as team captain for the second straight season and Nick Handy, who served as an assistant captain last season, will join the ranks as captain along with Stout, a first-time captain for the team.
"We have been blessed with some very good leaders since we have been here at SHU. This group is no different. They bring a level of intensity and accountability that this group needs," said Basti. "They are the right men for the right time, and we are looking forward to their leadership this season."
Last season, Houlihan appeared and started in all 13 games for the Pioneers, as he was a key part of the Sacred Heart defense. He collected 13 ground balls and caused seven turnovers.
Handy returns to the team as a senior midfielder from Providence, R.I. The second-year captain appeared in six games last season, picking up three ground balls and caused one turnover.
Stout made 13 appearances with 12 starts last season as part of the Pioneers offense. The Furlong, Pa native, tallied six goals with two assists last season, including two game-winning goals and two, man up goals. He also collected 28 ground balls.
Sacred Heart will open the season at the road at Saint Joseph's University on February 11th at 3:30 PM.
