The Pioneers will begin their journey in the MAAC this spring
FAIRFIELD, Conn.—The Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team has released the schedule for the 2023 season. The Pioneers enter a new stage as they transition into the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), beginning this spring.
Coach Jon Basti is entering his 10th season as head coach of the Pioneers and has put together a competitive schedule. "We are very excited to move into the MAAC Conference. It gives us the opportunity to create some new rivalries, while keeping some traditional ones with the other teams that have entered the conference," said Coach Basti.
Sacred Heart will open the season with four road games, beginning with Saint Joseph's University on February 11th. The following Saturday, the Pioneers will head to Lafayette University of the Patriot League for a 3:00 PM matchup. On Wednesday, February 22nd, Sacred Heart will battle with crosstown rival, Fairfield University at 7:00 PM. The four-game road trip will conclude at Stony Brook on Sunday, February 26th.
The Pioneers will return for the home opener in their final non-conference battle of the season when they host Drexel on March 4th at 12:00 PM.
The MAAC competition kicks off on the road at Siena on March 11th and Manhattan on March 18th.
"To prepare us for the gritty, tough nature of the MAAC, we worked hard on the out of conference schedule to build a competitive and difficult, five-game span."
Sacred Heart will have its first conference home game against Virginia Military Institute on Saturday, March 25th, at 12:00 PM.
Conference play continues on the road at Marist on Wednesday March 29th, Saturday, April 1st, against LIU at home, and Saturday, April 8th, on the road at Wagner.
The Pioneers will wrap up the regular season with three consecutive home games with Quinnipiac, Mount St. Mary's, and the final home game of the season will be against Canisius on Saturday, April 22nd, at 12:00 PM.
