Sal Miccio led Pioneers with three goals
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team closed out the 2022 season with a 15-10 setback against Long Island on Saturday evening.
Prior to the game, the Pioneers honored its 10 seniors; David Bartkus, Matt Block, Peter Callahan, Rob DiNota, Thomas Houlihan, Donovan Lacey, Max Lionetti, Alex Rice, Joe Rice, Daniel Rodriguez.

Of Note:
After Sal Miccio initiated the scoring, the Sharks scored three-straight to take the lead that they would not surrender. Jake Ward and Miccio scored back-to-back goals, but that was all SHU would get for the remainder of the second half. LIU took advantage and more than doubled its lead with four goals at the halftime break, 7-3.
The Pioneers got as close as three at the 6:43 mark in the third quarter thanks to an unassisted goal from Johnny Morgan, but that was as close as they would get before the final buzzer.
The game saw three-consecutive man-up goals with back-to-back from the Sharks to close out the third quarter and one from Miccio to open the fourth. The three-minute span consisted of five penalties, four of which came from the Red & White. The Pioneers committed six penalties and the Sharks capitalized on two extra-man opportunities. SHU found the back to of the net in its lone extra-man opportunity.
Sacred Heart had a tough time in the face-off X as it picked up eight compared to LIU's 19.
Sophomore Zach Buffington picked up his first career assist as a Pioneer as well as a career-high two caused turnovers.
