Rookie is first Pio honored in three years.
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Award season continues for Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse attacker Jake Ward. Following Northeast Conference accolades, he was recognized with an honorable mention award from the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).
Nearly every week during the regular season, Ward picked up NEC Rookie of the Week honors, which made him a natural choice for conference Rookie of the Year. He's the second Pio to win the award (Tim Canton '14).
Ward accumulated 17 goals and nine assists at attack and had a career performance in SHU's 14-10 victory at UMass Lowell with four points off three goals and one assist. The Highlands Ranch, Colo. native ranked third in the conference and seventh nationally amongst first-year players with a .410 shot percentage.
Ward is the first Pioneer recognized by the ECAC since Max Tutle was a First-Team selection in 2019. The rookie will be part of a strong offensive nucleus in 2023 as head coach Jon Basti returns his top five goal scorers.
