Pioneers kick off at home against Siena at 7 p.m.
FAIRFIELD, Conn.— It's a new season and a new era for the Sacred Heart University men's soccer team as it begins the 2022 season against Siena at Park Ave Field on Thursday.
During the offseason, Anthony Anzevui was named interim head coach for the Pioneers after Joe Barroso announced his retirement.
Sacred Heart welcomes back 16 of its players from the previous season. The Pioneers look to junior forward Olliver Persson to be the go-to this season after notching two goals last year. Other goal scorers from 2021 include sophomore defender Nick Kirby, junior midfielder Will Pearce and junior midfielder Robert Tullonge.
Graduate student midfielder Lucas Miquel Castrillo and sophomore defender Etienne Murugarren return to the squad after both were named Second Team All-Northeast Conference. Murugarren was also selected to the NEC All-Rookie Team.
Castrillo posted two assists and 21 shots with six on target. Murugarren recorded his first career assist while taking eight shots, seven of which were on goal.
Senior Justin Siegel is the only returning goalkeeper with multiple (12) starts. The native of Ramsey, N.J., ranked second in saves per game (5.50) and fourth in saves overall (5.50) in the NEC as a junior.
The Pioneers welcomed 11 first years and one transfer to the 2022 squad: Aidan Cann, Caiden Chapel, Matthias Dick, Batuhan Dikmen, David Garcia Gallego, Koke Gracia Martinez, Javier Lopez Cayuela, Zach Lorenz, Declan McStravick, Asa Moskowitz, Jaiden Paniagua and Evan Squire.
Sacred Heart plays five of its non-conference opponents from 2022, including in-state rivalries at Hartford (Sept. 7) and Quinnipiac (Sept. 14). The Pioneers also revive its series with Army (Sept. 10) and NJIT (Sept. 20).
The Pioneers start conference play at home against Fairleigh Dickinson on Sept. 25.
