Six Pioneers Collect CSC 2023 Academic All-District Recognition

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team had an outstanding presence in the 2023 Academic All-District Men's Soccer Team, selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC). Aidan Borra, David Garcia Gallego, Asa Moskowitz, Etienne Murugarren, Will Pearce and Olliver Persson represented the Pioneers.
The CSC recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. To qualify for this honor, student-athletes had to meet certain academic and on-field competition minimums.
Borra, a graduate midfielder, helped propel the Pioneers to their first NEC final game with a post-season goal against Merrimack and converted the final penalty kick against SFU in the semi-final. He started 16 of 18 games and tallied 1450 minutes while capturing two goals and one assist. In the classroom, Borra maintained a 3.72 GPA while obtaining his Master of Business Administration.
Garcia Gallego, a sophomore forward, earned All-NEC Second Team recognition. He started all 19 games totaling 1691 minutes while tallying four goals and four assists. Gallego has a cumulative GPA of 3.84 and is majoring in Marketing.
Moskowitz earned this honor after appearing in 18 games and starting seven of them as a sophomore midfielder. He was a key contributor off the bench for the Pioneers, tallying an assist and four shots. Moskowitz is pursuing a degree in Marketing with a cumulative GPA of 3.94.
Murugarren, a graduate defender, earned All-NEC Second Team recognition after contributing to the team's 1.22 goals-against average and five shutouts. He started and played in all games tallying the most minutes on the team with 1733. Murugarren is on track to graduate with a master's in Finance and Investment Management and has a 3.93 cumulative GPA.
Pearce, a senior defender, started in 11 games and appeared in 12 for the Pioneers. He helped contribute to the team's 1.22 goals-against average. Pearce has maintained a 3.92 GPA while studying Business Economics.
SHU's final honoree was Persson, who concluded his final season in 2023. The Haugesund, Norway, native has been a key contributor for the Pioneers. He led the team with five goals appearing in 19 games and started 18 of them. He is a Management major with a 3.83 cumulative GPA.
