Sophomore sets trio of career-bests
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Sophomore Magdalena Brogioli's high jump victory highlighted a good showing for the Sacred Heart University women's track and field squad at its first meet of the season, competing at the Youree Spence-Garcia Invitational hosted by St. John's University, Saturday evening.
In a stacked competition, Brogioli had an outstanding meet, setting personal bests in the 60m hurdles, shot put and taking first in the high jump with a mark of 1.65m. The native of Mattapoisett, Mass., took third in the 60m hurdles, posting a time of 8.88 seconds before setting a mark of 10.55m in the shot put, narrowly missing a top-10 finish.
On the track, several Pios had good showings including Madeline Archangelo who set personal best in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.98 seconds. In the women's 3000m, four runners set times under 11 minutes as Kelly Parker, Grace Sousa, Grace DelGiorno and Kathleen Cronin narrowly missed out on top-10 finishes in the event.
Three athletes finished inside the top-10 in the women's pole vault for SHU as Jenna Engels matched her career best she set at last season's NEC Championship meet, clearing a height of 3.65m to take fourth place in the event. Junior Sydney Abitanto and senior Jennifer Pasram rounded out the remainder of the top-10 finishes in the pole vault with both clearing 3.35m.
In throws, the Red & White earned results from two newcomers as first year's Ariyana Jackson took the bronze in women's shot put while Lauren Morales earned eighth in the event in their collegiate debuts. Jackson set a mark of 12.35m on her fourth throw to earn the podium finish while Morales hit 11.51m on her third throw of the day to claim the final scoring spot in eighth.
