Sacred Heart Opens Indoor NECs in Ninth

DiGangi and Croce tallied points for the Pios
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart University men's track and field team finished day one of the 2023 Northeast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in ninth place.
The Pios tallied five points on day one, trailing St. Francis College (N.Y.) by three points in eighth. Wagner College owns the lead through day one with 39 points.
Sacred Heart gained the most points from senior Daniel DiGangi, who earned three points by placing sixth in the pole vault. The Dix Hills, N.Y., native cleared 4.20m on his second attempt.
Rounding out the Pios' point-getters was Cameron Croce. The graduate student from Hope, R.I., placed seventh in the shot put with a toss of 15.13m. Croce's finish was good for two points for SHU.
The Pioneers made a lot of noise in the long jump, as the team had four participants finish in the top 14. Owen Nassaney (6.55m) was ninth, Benjamin Healy (6.37m) was 11th, Blake Stewart (6.32m) was 13th, and Dylan Hunt (6.24m) was 14th. Nassaney's jump was a new personal record for the senior, while Hunt set a new season high.
Rounding out SHU's top-15 finishers were Douglas Suter, Matthew Vene, and Aidan Glennon. Suter took 11th in the pole vault with a season-high mark of 3.75m. Glennon (13.59m) finished 12th in the shot put, while Vene (9:01.19) took 13th in the 3,000 meters.
The Pioneers hit the track for day two of NECs tomorrow at 9 a.m.
