SPARTANBURG, S.C. (March 5, 2023) – A four-run first spelled trouble from the beginning for the Sacred Heart University baseball team in Sunday afternoon's series finale at Wofford. The Pios settled in from there, but could never put a dent in the lead, as the host Terriers went on to a 5-1 win to finish off a three-game non-conference sweep at Russell C. King Field.
Wofford (10-1) scored four times in the bottom of the first and never looked back, on the way to its 10th straight win. Ryan Galanie and Dixon Black took care of the damage, as each cranked a two-run home run in the frame. The former went deep to right-center for his second in as many days and team-leading fifth of the season, while the latter went to left for his first of the campaign.
The Terriers tacked on an unearned run in the fourth to make it 5-0. Black reached on an error and eventually came around to score on an RBI single to center by Cameron Gill.
SHU (3-6) picked up its only run of the day in the top of the ninth inning. Zack Kovalchik (Archbald, Pa.) opened the inning with a single back up the middle and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by John Greene (Naugatuck, Conn.).
Right-hander Cooper Thompson (Clinton, Conn.) took the ball in the weekend finale for the Pios, but departed after just one inning of work. He was charged with four runs on two hits and two walks and suffered the loss (0-2). Right-hander Michael Boyian (Norwalk, Conn.) followed with four solid innings out of the bullpen, as he allowed just one unearned run on three hits and struck out one.
Right-hander Coulson Buchanan (2-0) tossed five scoreless innings for Wofford, allowed three hits and struck out six to pick up the win.
The Pios will stay in Spartanburg for a midweek non-conference tilt this week, as they visit USC Upstate on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Harley Park in Spartanburg, S.C.
