The Pioneers finish fourth in the NEC
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team was voted fourth in the 2023 Northeast Conference (NEC) Preseason Poll released Wednesday afternoon by the conference office.
The preseason coaches' poll is selected by the NEC's coaches and was announced through the league's social media channels. The conference does not allow coaches to vote for their team in the preseason polls.
"The vote reflects the progress made in year one," said head coach Anthony Anzevui. "The reality is that every team starts from the same position and points must be earned on the field. Every team is competitive, well coached and bring different challenges. We look forward to getting started."
The Pioneers are coming off its first-ever Division I postseason victory in program history. The team clinched a 1-0 win over Saint Francis in the first round of the NEC Tournament.
Sacred Heart has 22 players returning from last season, including four seniors.
The team finished fourth in the conference in the 2022 season with a 7-9-1 record and a 4-3-1 NEC record.
Sacred Heart opens its 2023 season at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 24, when it faces Fordham in a non-conference match at Coffey Field.
