Leon grabs gold as SHU grabs six medals
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Six podium finishes were on display as the Sacred Heart University men's track and field team concluded competition at the William Sutherland III Invitational hosted by Southern Connecticut State University, on Friday.
The Pioneers received four of their six podium placements on the track, highlighted by Jordan Leon's gold-medal outing in the 800 meters, taking the event with a time of 2:00.27. Elsewhere in distance, sophomore Daniel Rodriguez set a new personal-best in the 3000m, taking silver in the event with a time of 9:20.75.
In sprints, first year Christian Sonta nabbed the bronze in the 300m with a time of 40 seconds, just before fellow Pioneer Navon Fry who took fourth in the event with a finish of 40.64 seconds. In the 55m dash, Nikolaos Kostopoulos took fifth place overall after slotting into fourth place after prelims while in the 200m Nicholas Pereira set a new personal-best with a time of 24.63.
In hurdles, Damon Wilson earned his third medal of the season after taking home the silver medal in the 55m hurdles. Having missed out on a medal at last weekend's showing at the Suffolk University Ice Breaker, Wilson nabbed his second silver medal of the year.
The Red & White earned their final medals of the day in pole vault as first year's Aidan Riccardo and Kelvin Paulino-Acosta grabbed second and third, respectively. Riccardo's mark of 2.95m set a new personal-record in just his second appearance in the event.
Concluding the action, SHU's Hunter Harris took the highest placement in the triple jump, narrowly missing the podium after setting a mark of 11.87m on his final jump. In throws, the Pios received strong performances in both the weight throw and shot put as Joshua Wood (weight throw) and Anthony DePasquale (shot put) took the highest finishes for SHU in their respective events.
