Sansbury, Jaworski to serve as co-captains
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (October 10, 2024) – The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team has finalized its 2024-25 leadership group, as announced by head coach C.J. Marottolo. Hunter Sansbury (Lomita, Calif.) will retain a "C" on his jersey as one of the team's two co-captains. He will be joined by John Jaworski (Grinnell, Iowa), who has been elevated after a stint as alternate captain a year ago. Sporting the "A" this winter as alternate captains will be Mikey Adamson (Quincy, Mass.) and Tyler Ghirardosi (Montrose, British Columbia).
"We are excited to announce our leadership group for the upcoming season," said Marottolo. "They will be vital in pushing our team to the standard that is demanded, guiding their teammates and fostering teamwork in our pursuit of being the best we can be."
Sansbury retains his captaincy after finishing as the team's second-leading defensive scorer (5-10-15) last season. His 102 blocked shots led Atlantic Hockey by an 18-block margin and his 75 shots were tops on the team among blueliners.
Meanwhile, Jaworski moves up from an "A" to a "C" in 2024-25, after tying for the team lead in scoring last season, at 10-16-26. He was an All-Atlantic Hockey Third Team pick and a College Sports Communicators All-Academic selection last winter.
Adamson joins the leadership brigade as an alternate captain after leading the team's defensemen in scoring (4-16-20) in his first season as a Pioneer last year. He also blocked 38 shots along the way.
Ghirardosi wore a letter on his sweater while at fellow Atlantic Hockey member Holy Cross last season and will sport an "A" in his graduate season at Sacred Heart. He was a finalist for Atlantic Hockey's Best Defensive Forward award last season while finishing 10th in the league in shots (109) and tied for second in game-winning goals (4).
SHU opens its 32nd season of varsity competition this weekend, with a two-game trip to take on ECAC member Colgate. Game time is 7 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday at Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, N.Y.
