Pios start four-game homestand Friday night
BOSTON (November 11, 2024) – Two members of the Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team have earned weekly awards from Atlantic Hockey America for their work over the weekend, as announced on Monday afternoon by the league office. Graduate student John Jaworski (Grinnell, Iowa) has been named AHA Forward of the Week, while first-year goaltender Ajeet Gundarah (Richmond, British Columbia) has collected AHA Rookie of the Week accolades.
It is the first career AHA weekly award for both Pioneers.
Jaworski went for four points (2-2-4) across two games this weekend, as SHU swept Mercyhurst on the road. He had a first-period assist in Friday night's 4-3 victory and then carried the load on Saturday. In the series finale, Jaworski scored twice in the second period, including a power-play goal which would stand as the game-winner, and later added a third-period assist for good measure in a 4-1 win. He tallied five shots across the weekend.
On the season, Jaworski is now third on the team in scoring, with eight points on three goals and five assists.
Meanwhile, Gundarah made his first two collegiate starts in Erie, Pa., and won them both. He stopped 60 of 64 shots across the two games, to post a .938 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against average. Gundarah made 34 saves against 35 shots in Saturday's finale to notch his first career 30-save game.
On the season, Gundarah has played in three games and boasts a .922 save percentage and a 2.27 goals-against average. Those numbers would both rank among the top five in Atlantic Hockey, but Gundarah still needs to log more minutes to qualify for the league's statistical leaderboards.
SHU (4-5-1, 3-3-0 AHA) is home for the next two weekends, starting with a pair against Robert Morris on Nov. 15-16 at Martire Family Arena. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday.
