Alvim, Gaberkorn, Krylova shine
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (November 11, 2024) – Senior Maria Alvim (Lisbon, Portugal) led the way on Sunday, with a 12-2 record in the epee, as the Sacred Heart University women's fencing team split six matches at the Vassar Invitational. Junior Nadia Gaberkorn (Marlboro, N.J.) impressed in the epee as well, with an 11-3 record, while junior Valery Krylova (Shelton, Conn.) posted a 15-3 record in the sabre.
The epee squad was the highlight of the day for SHU, as seven fencers combined for a 38-16 mark at the meet. The Pioneers were shorthanded in the sabre, but the duo of Krylova and first year Jess Murphy (Lincoln Park, N.Y.) put together an impressive, 23-13 mark anyway.
SHU opened the day with back-to-back wins: 14-8 over Cleveland State and a 14-13 nail biter against Stevens. The epee team went 8-1 against the former to carry the load and then went 6-3 vs. Stevens to counteract a 5-4 deficit in both foil and sabre.
The Pios then suffered three straight defeats: 20-6 against Yale; 14-13 to LIU, despite a 7-2 showing from the epee team; and 19-8 to Johns Hopkins.
Sacred Heart rebounded to end the day on a high note. The epee crew went a perfect 9-0 as SHU rolled to a 21-6 win over Yeshiva, winning every bout that was actually fenced against the Maccabees.
SHU is idle this weekend and then travels to Brown on Nov. 23-24, for the NFC Championship.
