Men's Basketball Falls to Quinnipiac on the Road

SHU's three-game win-streak snapped
HAMDEN, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University men's basketball team had its three-game win streak snapped on Sunday afternoon, falling to Quinnipiac 83-73 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on the road. Amiri Stewart had 18 points, leading three Pioneers in double figures.

Through the opening five minutes of play, neither team led by more than three points. After an 11-11 tie, Bryce Johnson and Stewart scored five straight points to take a 16-11 lead. The Bobcats answered with a layup, cutting the deficit to two, but Mekhi Conner added a pair to regain the five-point edge.
Quinnipiac scored eight straight to come from behind and take a 21-18 lead at 11:18, but Raymond Espinal-Guzman made a layup, and a Fallou Gueye triple gave SHU a 23-21 advantage.
After a pair of made free throws for the Bobcats, an Espinal-Guzman layup sparked a 7-0 run, capped by a Griffin Barrouk three-pointer, to give the Pioneers a 30-23 edge. However, Quinnipiac answered with a 7-0 run of their own to tie it up at 30-30. From there, neither team led by more than two until the Bobcats scored the final four points of the half, taking a 42-39 advantage heading into the break.
A Barrouk triple tied the game at 42, but Quinnipiac answered with a trey of their own to jump ahead by three. Anquan Hill was successful with an and-one situation to tie the game one again, at 45-45. From there, the Bobcats opened the game a bit, going on a 7-0 run, taking a 52-45 lead.
A pair of Hill free throws pulled the Pios within six, but Quinnipiac hit a triple to take a 62-53 lead at 11:15 in the second. After a Nyle Ralph-Beyer three-pointer, the Bobcats went on a 7-2 run to take a 69-58 edge. A Stewart dunk pulled the Pioneers within single digits, but Quinnipiac hit a three-pointer to jump back ahead, 72-60.
Four straight points from Johnson pulled the Pioneers within eight. At 3:51, the Bobcats were ahead by 10, but Johnson answered again for SHU with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to seven, 78-71. Quinnipiac jumped ahead by 10 and held the Pioneers off to take the 83-73 final.
Sacred Heart shot 45% (25-for-55) from the field and outrebounded the Bobcats, 34-26.

The Pioneers will have a break as they return home on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 11:00 am with a non-conference game against UAlbany for Kids Day in the William H. Pitt Center.
