Pioneers grab 11 top-10 placements during two-day meet
NEW YORK — The Sacred Heart University men's track and field team wrapped up competition at the Rutgers University Scarlet Knight Open on Saturday evening, earning 11 top-10 finishes during the two-day meet.
In Sprints, Rafael Mahario earned SHU's lone top-10 placement, narrowly missing out on the podium with an IC4A qualifying time of 22.06 seconds in the 200m. The Pios also received a strong showing from junior Nazir Hibbert who grabbed a new personal record in the 60m with a time of 7.05 seconds.
The Red & White also recorded four top-10 placements in relays, highlighted by SHU's bronze medal showing in the 4x400 as Jacob Strain, Douglas Suter, Joshua Sanders and Mahario combined to finish in an IC4A qualifying time of 3:22.19. The Pios also had a strong showing from both relays in the 4x200 meter, finishing in sixth and eighth, respectively.
In distance, SHU recorded 10 personal-records, including four in the men's 800m with James Moore, Owen Delisle, Owen Parker and Declan Toland all earning the feat. David Parenteau and Kevin Martin both recorded a personal best in the men's 1000m, finishing 15th and 16, respectively.
In field, Hibbert took home eighth place in the high jump, clearing 1.85m for SHU's best finish in the event. Elsewhere in throws, SHU grabbed three top-10 placements in shot put, highlighted by first year Anthony DePasquale's fourth-place finish, setting a personal-best mark of 13.26 on his second throw. In weight throw, Joshua Wood took eighth place in the college section while Daniel Blatman had a strong showing in the championship section, setting an IC4A qualifying mark of 17.17m on his fourth throw to place fifth in the event.
