SHU claims third set of MAAC weekly honors
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team brought in a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) weekly awards for the second consecutive week. Sal Miccio was named the Offensive Player of the Week, and Alex Pazienza earned his second Defensive Player of the Week accolade this season.
In the Pioneers 14-12 victory over Manhattan, Miccio matched his career-high of seven points as Sacred Heart improved to 2-0 in conference play. He scored four goals along with dishing out three assists as SHU came from behind in the fourth quarter to take the 14-12 final. With the Pios trailing 12-10 after the third, Miccio scored a man-up goal to bring SHU within one, put up an assist on Morgan O'Reilly's goal to tie the game, and then scored the goal to put Sacred Heart ahead 13-12 with 6:25 left to go in the game. His four goals are a season-high, and his seven points match his career-high, which he also hit during the Pios season-opener against Stony Brook.
Pazienza brings in his second Defensive Player of the Week honor after making 14 saves in SHU's victory over Manhattan on Saturday. The senior goalie had a .538 save percentage in the win and held the Jaspers scoreless in the final quarter of play. During the final frame, Pazienza made four saves to enable SHU to come from behind and take their second straight home conference win.
The Pioneers will continue MAAC play on the road at Virginia Military Institute on Saturday, March 23, at noon.
