Connecticut Native claims two gold medals during two-day meet
SMITHTOWN, R.I. — Rafael Mahario's record-breaking time in the men's 400m concluded a successful weekend at the Black & Gold Invitational hosted by Bryant University, as the Sacred Heart University men's track & field team claimed sixth place out of 14 teams during the two-day meet.
Mahario, who ran his fastest time in the outdoor season during the two-day meet, broke the Black & Gold Invite record that was set by Rhode Island's Anthony Delasanta back in 2019 (48.45) with a time of 47.94 to earn one of his two medals on Saturday afternoon. A native of Meriden, Conn., Mahario helped SHU claim first in the men's 4x100m relay along with Joshua Sanders, Benjamin Healy and Colin Brown for his second gold medal during the meet. Brown and Pioneer junior Connor Meikle also scored for the Pios in the men's 400m, placing fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Pios continued to have a good showing on the track as Sanders and Healy both scored in the 110m hurdles with top-10 finishes of their own. Daniel Rodriguez was the lone participant for SHU in the 3000m Steeplechase, claiming tenth before the Pios rounded out the track portion with a third-place finish in the 4x400m relay that included Meikle, Healy, Lance Hayes and Owen Parker.
In field, the Pios earned strong showings in the triple jump as Dylan Hunt narrowly missed a podium finish with a mark of 12.61m on his first attempt while Hunter Harris claimed eighth in the event with a mark of 12.04m. Aidan Glennon threw well in the shot put en route to a fourth-place finish with a mark of 13.91m while Joshua Wood claimed a new personal-best in the hammer throw, setting a mark of 49.42m in his final throw to conclude the scoring for the Pioneers.
