FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. – The Sacred Heart University women's golf team set a new 18-hole record on Friday after shooting -4 284 in the first round at the SHU Spring Break Invitational at the Eagle Harbor Golf Club in Fleming Island, Fla.
The Pioneers hold a 13-stroke lead over second-place Purdue Fort Wayne with a 297. Sacred Heart also leads Northeast Conference (NEC) foes Merrimack (304) and Saint Francis (329).
SHU leads the event because four Pioneers sit in the top five. Kailee Welch leads the group and the tournament with a two-under 70. The grad student carded three birdies on the front nine and two on the back.
Margot Rouquette and Maya Robilio are tied for second with a one-under 71. Both players made one birdie on the front nine and three on the back nine.
Chantal El Chaib is SHU's final golfer in the top five in fifth. She carded an even-par 72 with three birdies.
Jensie Nicholas (79) and Jessie Burch (82) rounded out the Pioneers' competitors in T23rd and T35th.
Day two of the event will start tomorrow morning.
