Hayes grabs two gold medals during weekend finale
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. — Lance Hayes' two-medal outing catapulted the Sacred Heart University men's track and field squad to a second-place team finish at the Merrimack College Alumni Classic on Sunday as the Pioneers grabbed 13 medals across the day's events.
Hayes grabbed both of his gold medals on the track, ending the day with a personal-best 49.46 second finish in the 400m dash before anchoring the Pios in the 4x400 relay as part of the quartet of Alexander Rotondi, Owen Parker and Dominic Miele that finished in 3:26.33 seconds.
Elsewhere in sprints, Colin Brown grabbed a second-place finish behind Hayes in the 400m with a personal-best time of 49.98 seconds while in the 800m run, Edward Tristine grabbed a bronze medal with a time of 1:58.48 seconds. The Pios also showed well in distance with Matthew Vene claiming the lone distance medal in the 1500m, earning third place just in front of Giovanni Prestipino who earned fourth. David Parenteau also earned a top-five finish in the 5000m, earning fourth place.
SHU also earned two medals in the hurdles with Damon Wilson claiming second in the 110m hurdles in front of three fellow first year athletes while Rotondi claimed his second medal of the meet with a third place in the 400m hurdles, finishing just in front of Douglas Suter and Navon Fry who claimed fourth and fifth, respectively.
SHU showed strong in the relays with the aforementioned event win in the 4x400. The quartet of Ryan Jaipaul. Brendan Lyles, Declan Toland and Owen Delisle earned SHU's final medal in the relays with a third-place finish in the 4x400m. In the 4x100m, the group of Damon Wilson, Jacques Lucien II, Hunter Harris and Jakob Sargent earned fourth place.
The Pios grabbed the remainder of their five medals in the field events, highlighted by Liam Tharin's event win in discus. The Pioneer sophomore claimed a personal-best mark of 43.40m on his final throw to claim the event win. Douglas Suter and Dylan Hunt also had strong showings in jumps with Suter earning second in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.95m while Hunt claimed a silver in the triple jump with a mark of 12.58m on his final jump.
Aidan Glennon grabbed one of the remaining two medals in throws with a bronze in the shot put, setting a mark of 13.47m on his fifth throw to grab third place while Joshua Wood secured the remaining medal on the board for the Pios with a third-place outing in the hammer throw, setting a mark 50.39m on his second throw to conclude the meet for the Pios.
