Pioneers earn second-consecutive team victory of outdoor season
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. — Angela Kaiser's two distance victories culminated in a successful day for the Sacred Heart University women's track and field squad as 28 medals saw the Pioneers claim first-place overall at the Merrimack College Alumni Classic on Sunday.
A native of North Attleboro, Mass., Kaiser grabbed her first of two gold medals in the 800m, setting a personal-best time of 2:21.51 before grabbing first in the 1500m with a time of 4:44.70 as the Pios earned nine event wins on the afternoon. Following Kaiser in the 800m, Grace DelGiorno claimed second place with a time of 2:24.85 while in the 1500m, Grace Sousa finished in third place with a time of 4:55.88 as seven Pios claimed top-10 finishes in the distance event. Rounding out the distance portion, Keegan Pepin claimed a silver medal with a time of 18:56.83 in the 5000m.
SHU also had strong showings in the sprints portion with Jada Alston grabbing two bronze medals in the 100m and 200m, respectively. Alston claimed both her medlas just in front of fellow teammates, grabbing third in the 100m with a time of 12.55 seconds before a 26.68 second finish in the 200m. The Red & White also claimed one of their 28 medals on the day with a third-place outing by Tori Chorzepa in the 400m.
In the hurdles, the Pios claimed two medal sweeps with Magdalena Brogioli earning a personal-best 14.86 second finish in the 100m hurdles to claim gold. Following behind her, first year athletes Ariyana Jackson and Cali Terranova earned second and third, respectively, to give SHU the medal sweep in the event. The Pios followed suit in the 400m hurdles as Ava Srinivasan set a personal-best time of 1:05.83 en route to a gold medal while Olivia Suter and Nicole Parise earned second and third, respectively, as the Pios continued to rack up the medals on the track.
The dominance continued in the relays with two silvers on the afternoon in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. In the shorter of the two events, the quartet of Jillian Audette, Brogioli, Annalise Nassy and Alston claimed second place while the group of Chorzepa, Marisa Maio, Emily Raymond and Diamani Canuto grabbed silver in the 4x400m relay to conclude the medals earned on the track for the Pios.
In the jumps portion, the Pios swept the gold medals in all four individual events kickstarted by Lauryn Piccirelli's win in the high jump, clearing 1.59m for her third-consecituve medal in the event. Following behind her, Ava Coscia claimed third with a clearance of 1.54m. In pole vault, Jenna Engels grabbed a gold medal with a 3.25m clearance on her first attempt at the height while fellow Pioneers Sydney Abitanto and Jennifer Pasram cleared 3.25m on their third attempts, respectively, to grab second.
Conitnuing in jumps, Erin Lavelle grabbed her first gold medal in the long jump during the outdoor season, setting a mark of 5.47m with no wind assistance on her second jump to grab the gold. Brogioli also had a strong outing with a third place finish in the event, setting a mark of 5.42m on her second jump to earn her third medal of the afternoon. The Pios concluded the jumps portion with a medal sweep in the triple jump as Kaylee Stenderowicz grabbed the gold in front of Lavelle and Srinivasan with a mark of 11.36m on her final jump. Lavelle claimed second with a mark of 11.03m while Srinivasan claimed third with a mark of 10.60m.
SHU concluded the meet with two medal showings in throws with Lauren Morales grabbing the spotlight with a win in the discus, setting a mark of 38.16m on her third throw before grabbing second in the shot put with a mark of 11.04m on her final throw to claim her second medal of the meet as the Pios grabbed their second-consecutive team victory of the outdoor season.
