Junior sprinter shows out among nation's best

BATON ROUGE, La. — Rafael Mahario had a strong outing at the Louisiana State University (LSU) Alumni Gold meet on Saturday, earning a pair of top-20 finishes among some of the best collegiate sprinters in the nation.

Mahario, a native of Meriden, Conn., was the lone athlete for the Pioneers at the meet, earning a spot to race in both the 400m and 200m. Mahario began the day with a strong performance in the 400m, setting a personal-best time of 47.18 seconds which slotted him in 16^th place. His time at the meet also earns him second in the Northeast Conference (NEC) after Saturday evening.

In the 200m dash, Mahario grabbed a 20^th place finish with a time of 22.61 seconds which is his second fastest time in the event during the outdoor season. His season-best time of 21.89 seconds at the Wilton Wright Invitational lists him in the top-10 in the NEC in that event.
