The three-day tournament begins on Friday, April 26
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – As one of the most decorated teams in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's golf history, the Sacred Heart University men's golf team looks to get back to the top of the league ranks at the 2024 NEC Championship on Friday-Sunday, April 26-28.
The 2024 NEC Championship will be held at the beautiful Lake View Course at Callaway Resort & Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga. The Lake View Course is a par-70 track with four tees ranging from 4,473 to 6,158 yards. The course features water on nine holes, including five holes routed along scenic Mountain Creek Lake. The course's signature hole is the par-3 10th, which features an island tee and a serpentine bridge.
The Pioneers have won the NEC Championship four times in program history, last taking the crown in 2022. Last season, SHU placed third in a tightly-contested tournament. Sacred Heart finished nine strokes off the pace of champion LIU, posting a final score of 879 compared to the Sharks' 870. Howard (875) was second to round out the three-team race for the crown.
Sacred Heart has been consistently stellar this season, heading to the NEC Championship with a top-10 finish in all but one of its tournaments. The Pioneers' campaign has been highlighted by a win at the SHU Fall Classic and a third-place showing at the SHU Spring Break Invitational.
Two-time NEC Golfer of the Year Marcus Lim continued to lead the Pioneers in 2023-24, pacing the team in seven tournaments this season. The senior from Selangor, Malaysia, averages a team-low 71.0 stroke average per round. He has also tallied five top-five finishes this year, with a win at the Autumn Invitational.
Mike Rothberg has been another key member of the lineup, pacing the team in its last tournament before the NEC Championship, the Abarta Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational. The sophomore has finished a season-best T3rd at the SHU Fall Classic, maintaining a round average of 73.7.
Fellow sophomore Pablo Lacayo has joined Lim and Rothberg in the top half of the lineup this season. The Managua, Nicaragua native led the way for SHU at the Nassau Intercollegiate, with his T5th finish at the SHU Fall Classic marking a season-best placement. He owns a 75.0 average per round this season.
Jason Pelley and Eoin Freeman have also been heavily featured in the Pioneers' lineup this season. Pelley has competed in eight events this year, finishing a season-best seventh at the SHU Fall Classic. Freeman has teed it up in six events, placing a season-best T21st at the SHU Fall Classic.
