Pioneers conclude successful meet with 28 podium finishes
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — With an astounding 28 podium placements, the Sacred Heart University women's track & field squad ran away with the competition by taking a first place team finish at the Wilton Wright Invitational hosted by Southern Connecticut University on Saturday. The Pioneers scored in all but one event, earning 269 points to take top honors of the nine teams competing.
In sprints, the Pios earned four medals including two in the women's 400m dash. First year Diamani Canuto grabbed her first individual medal of the outdoor season with a silver-medal showing in the event, finishing in a personal-best 1:00.64 seconds. Tori Chorzepa was close behind to take third in the event with a time of 1:01.82. Jillian Audette claimed third place in the 200m while Magdalena Brogioli grabbed a bronze in the 100m with personal-best time. In total, 10 Pioneers earned top-10 placements through the sprinting portion of Saturday's meet.
In the mid-distance and distance portions, the Pioneers grabbed a majority of their points with a medal-sweep in the 5000m as Isabella Rogler, Grace Miller and first year Adriana Franzese went first through third, respectively, to propel SHU's point total toward the top. Emma Doran scored with a ninth-place finish in the 1500m while Sarah Mandelkow, Madison Breckner and Jacqueline Lage earned points for SHU in the 800m run.
The Pioneers concluded their day on the track with three medals in the hurdles before placing three relay squads on the podium. Olivia Suter and Kaleigh Jess teamed up to grab second and third for the Pios in the 400m hurdles while Madeline Archangelo beat out fellow teammate Ariyana Jackson for third place in the 100m hurdles with the latter taking fourth place to continue adding toward the total team score. The Red & White claimed all three different medals in the relays with the 4x100m taking top honors as the quartet of Brogioli, Annalise Nassy, Jillian Audette and Jada Alston nabbed the gold with a time of 49.21 seconds. In the 4x400m relay, the squad of Chorzepa, Ava Srinivasan, Marisa Maio and Alexandra Bold took second while Nicole Parise, Mollie Story, Lage and Mandelkow grabbed third.
In jumps, the Pios grabbed two medal sweeps in the pole vault and triple jump. Jenna Engels led the way for the Pioneers by taking the top nod in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.35 meters while Jennifer Pasram and Sophia DeMillio rounded out the podium by clearing 3.20 meters. The Pioneers concluded the event with eight total finishes in the top-10. In triple jump, Erin Lavelle grabbed one of her two medals during the meet with a gold medal showing in the triple jump while Kaylee Stenderowicz and Srinivasan earned second and third place finishes, respectively.
Lavelle continued her dominance in the long jump by earning a personal-best with a mark of 5.85m on her fourth jump to grab second in the event with teammates Brogioli and Archangelo following behind her with fifth and sixth place finishes. In the high jump, Lauryn Piccirelli claimed second place, clearing 1.50m on her second attempt while Archangelo and Jessica Bianco tied for third place by clearing 1.45 meters.
SHU represented well in throws as Lauren Morales completed the double, taking gold in both the shot put and discus events, earning a personal-best mark in the discus throw with a mark of 37.14 meters on her third throw. Ariyana Jackson also nabbed a medal in the shot put, taking third with a mark or 11.27 meters. Marisa Imme concluded the podium outpour for SHU with a second place finish in the javelin with a throw of 37.43 meters as the Pios finished as the top overall team.
