Trio of Pios earn honor for second straight year
GREENWOOD, Ind. (June 4, 2024) – The Sacred Heart University baseball team has had four players named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team, as announced on Tuesday. Junior Charlie Costello (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), junior Zack Kovalchik (Archbald, Pa.), junior Tim McGuire (Portsmouth, R.I.) and sophomore Jonathan Peterson (Florham Park, N.J.) were all honored.
To be eligible for selection, each student-athlete must own a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average or higher, be at least a sophomore in academic standing, and have either participated in at least 90% of their team's games or started two-thirds of them (pitchers need either make 17 appearances or log 25 innings). Schools were limited to five nominations per school, with all nominees who met the criteria earning Academic All-District honors.
Those with elite academic and athletic accomplishments, like Kovalchik, will advance to the Academic All-America ballot. The Academic All-America Team will be voted on by communications professionals from across the nation. The Academic All-America Team is expected to be announced on Tuesday, July 2.
Costello, Kovalchik and McGuire all earned Academic All-District accolades for the second straight season. Peterson collected the award for the first time in his career.
Part of the back end of the SHU bullpen, Costello has a 3.969 GPA as an accounting major. He made 15 appearances on the mound, totaling 34 innings, but then missed the remainder of the season due to injury. Costello recorded 16 strikeouts against just five walks and tallied one save.
An All-Northeast Conference First Team pick on the field this spring, Kovalchik carries a 3.977 GPA as a biology major in the classroom. Sacred Heart's everyday center fielder, he appeared in 57 of the team's 58 games, including 56 starts, to log the most playing time of any Pioneer. Kovalchik put together a .315/.401/.514 slash line, good for a team-leading .915 OPS across 222 at-bats (70-for-222).
McGuire sports a 3.742 GPA as an accounting major. The other lineup regular with an OPS north of .900, the SHU third baseman hit .326/.418/.484 with the team's leading batting average across 184 at-bats (60-for-184). McGuire played in 49 games and made 47 starts while posting a .902 OPS.
Peterson has put together a 3.6 GPA as a management major. In his first season with the Pios, the southpaw logged 25.1 innings across 15 appearances, including a pair of midweek starts. He recorded 23 strikeouts and posted a 2-2 record.
SHU (35-23, 25-8 NEC) finished the season with a program-record 35 wins and captured its first ever NEC regular-season title this spring. The Pios returned to the title round of the NEC Championship for the first time since 2017.
